Community Housing Initiative, Inc.
(C.H.I.) is a certified Community Housing Development Organization, a Community Development Corporation, and a 501(c)(3), charitable non-profit housing provider that has been established since 1992. C.H.I. has demonstrated capacity in the development of affordable housing in the community and has an unmistakable presence in Brevard County. C.H.I. is dedicated to assisting in the provision of affordable housing to the residents of our community. C.H.I. is committed to assisting the residents of this community in attaining the American dream of home ownership.
Community Housing is currently involved in single-family homeownership and multi-family rentals. C.H.I. administers down payment and closing costs assistance programs for the City of Melbourne, Cocoa, Palm Bay, Titusville and Brevard County. These programs assist very low, low-income and moderate-income homebuyers with down payment, closing costs and rehabilitation funds. The programs utilize State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) dollars and HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) Program dollars. The administration consists of marketing, pre-screening, income and asset verification, loan processing, property inspections, rehabilitation work write-up, pre and post homebuyer counseling, closing requirements and recording of the city's mortgage.
Staff consists of Nicole Tenpenny, the Executive Director; Brenda Weed, Financial Specialist and Dorcy Normandia, Housing Counselor. The day-to-day activities concerning the assistance programs and housing counseling activities are primarily conducted by Dorcy Normandia, with Brenda Weed as a back-up. The facilitation of the homebuyer education workshop will be a combination of all three current staff. Nicole Tenpenny is responsible for the overall project management of all activities conducted by Community Housing Initiative, Inc.
C.H.I. is a HUD approved Housing Counseling Agency. As such, we conduct many types of counseling services; pre-purchase counseling, credit counseling, rental counseling, homebuyer education and mortgage default counseling.
As a developer, C.H.I. is building single family homes in the cities of Melbourne and Cocoa that will be sold to income eligible first time homebuyers. As of July 15, 2008, C.H.I. has completed 24 infill homes.
